Maintenance

6.1 General Description
To keep the printer in optimum condition, it is essential to perform several types of maintenance on a regular basis, including cleaning of the exterior, lubrication, ink drain pad replacement, and printhead cleaning. Cleaning of the exterior consists of wiping off dirt and dust on the outer cases using denatured alcohol, as well as vacuuming debris and dust accumulated in the printer. It is important to check that printer gears are adequately lubricated. In addition to maintenance mentioned above, this printer needs an occasional ink pad replacement and printhead cleaning when necessary. This chapter gives information on when and how to maintain the printer.

WARNING

;Be sure to unplug the AC power cable before disassembling and assembling the printer. ;Be careful not to get ink in your eyes. If ink does get in your eyes, wash it away with fresh water and see a doctor. ;Follow the instructions below when handling the lithium battery installed on the C202 MAIN board. Keep the battery away from any metal materials. Be sure to mount the battery in the right direction. Do not heat up or burn the battery. ;Once the ink cartridge is removed from the ink cartridge holder for servicing, replace it with a new
one before returning to the customer.

6.2 Maintenance
6.2.1 Cleaning
To keep this printer working at its best, it is indispensable to keep it clean by removing dust and dirt not only on the outer case but also inside the printer. Accumulated dust and debris may cause a printer malfunction. Therefore be sure to clean the printer interior whenever you get a chance. Read the CAUTION below before performing any cleaning.

CAUTION

;Never apply thinner, trichloroethylene, or toner-based solvents to any plastic parts. These substances may cause plastic or rubber parts to deform or degenerate. ;Do not clean cases with a hard brush that may cause damage. ;Be careful not to damage any interior parts when cleaning inside the printer. ;If you need to remove ink remaining on the PF roller, moisten a soft cloth with alcohol. Take care with
the PF roller, since it is coated with a powdery material, which could peel from impact.

6.2.2 Lubrication
Lubricants need to be applied to specified points on the printer. Specified lubrication points and EPSONrecommended lubricants are listed in Table 6-1. The recommended lubricants, G-26 and O-8, have been tested and found most applicable to this printer mechanism. Also, you need to apply the appropriate amount of lubricant, since excessive application may damage nearby parts. (See Table 6-2.)

CAUTION

;Never apply too much oil to the carriage guide shaft. Excess lubrication can damage the printhead. ;Make sure the surface to be lubricated is not soiled before lubricating. ;When applying O-8, use the provided container and be sure not to leave any oil after use.
6.2.2.1 Recommended Lubricants
Table 6-1 lists the recommended lubricants. You can order the listed grease and oil through the service parts department. Table 6-1. Maintenance

6.2.3 Ink Drain Pad Replacement
This printer has ink drain pads at the bottom of the printer mechanism. The need to replace them is measured by the amount of ink used, which is determined based on the number of head drive pulses accumulated in the counter. When the counted number exceeds a specified amount, a maintenance error occurs and is indicated by the LEDs on the control panel. (All LEDs on the panel blink to indicate this condition.) Occurrence of this error means the end of pad's capacity and requires immediate pad replacement. The replacement procedures are as follows: 1. 2. Remove the ink drain pads; then replace them with new ones, which are listed as EPSON-exclusive service parts. (See the section entitled Ink Drain Pad Removal in Chapter 3.) After replacement, reset "Protection Counter A" in the EEPROM. The printer will not recover from the error condition until you perform this function. Press the Load/Eject, Cleaning (Black), and Cleaning (Color) buttons while turning on the printer. Then press and hold down Cleaning (Color) for 3 seconds to reset EEPROM.

CAUTION

;Be sure to replace the ink drain pad whenever the EEPROM is reset. If you continue to operate printer without a replacing the pad, the waste ink can overflow and damage printer parts. ;Whenever you replace the EEPROM, replace the waste ink drain pads also.
6.2.4 Head Cleaning

the

This printer has 2 built-in cleaning modes: automatic and manual (forcible). Normally, the printer is in automatic cleaning mode, in which it runs through a series of cleaning cycles that flush different amounts of ink through the printhead to keep it clean. However, this mode is not effective to correct print quality problems. In these cases, you must perform manual cleaning using the control panel. There are 2 separate cleaning buttons: Cleaning (Black) and Cleaning (Color). These buttons are effective when printer power is on and when neither the Ink Low nor the Ink End condition is detected. Whenever you encounter a problem that requires cleaning, use the procedure below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Turn printer power on. When the power-on sequence is completed, verify that the printer is not in Ink Low or Ink End status. Connect the printer to a computer and send five full pages of data (60 lines each) to the printer. Press the Cleaning (Black) or Cleaning (Color) button, depending on which printhead has the problem. The LED next to the power button blinks during the cleaning cycle. When the cycle is complete, the LED next to the power button stops blinking and the carriage returns to the home position.

CAUTION

;To perform a full cleaning cycle using the maximum amount of ink, you must first send at least five pages of data to the printer before pressing the cleaning button. ;You can perform manual cleaning using the printer driver utility as well as the control panel. ;Do not perform a manual cleaning unless there is an obvious printing problem. Excessive cleaning
shortens ink life considerably.
