2 Safety Warnings
· · · Driver should not operate in the areas where the explosive gases, corrosive and asidic substances are exist. Driver should be mounted by authorized personnel. Otherwise there are risk of fire, electrical shock or injury. Since there is no torque produced by the motor when the driver power is off, the parts on the machinery may drop, hit or rotate unvoluntarily. Therefore be sure that the dangereous parts are fixed in their safe locations before power is off. Motor connection should not plugged or unplugged while driver is enegized. During the operation driver/motor set, the surface temperatures may be rised up to 75 80 °C. Therefore the appliances that sensitive to heat should not place close to driver/motor set.

4 OPERATION MODES

Operation Modes

External Control (step-dir) SW1-4 : ON
· step, enable, direction signals are driven by external controller such as PLC, PC. · SW1:1-3 selects microstep. · SW2 selects motor current.

Internal control SW1-4 : OFF

Command/response
· Stemo executes simple commands come from RS-232 port.

User Program
· User programs are executed. Stemo-PS interface software is used to develope the user program. · Driver is controller as well.

4.1

External Control (step-dir) (Setting: SW1- 4 : ON)

In the external control mode, electronic unit operates as motor driver. In this case some inputs have dedicated functions: · Step (Input-1) input is used to rotate the motor step by step. · Enable (Input-2) input is used to enable or disable the motor movement. If Enable signal is active, phase currents are enabled, otherwise phase currents are zero. Step signals are ignored when the Enable is inactive. · Direction (Input-3) input is used to set the rotation direction. In the external control mode; Microstep setting is done by SW1:1-3. See the Table-1. Motor current setting is done by SW2. See the Table-2. Refer to the sections 4.1.1- 4.1.4 for the multi I/O connections.

Command/Response (setting: SW1- 4 : OFF)

Command/response mode operation is achieved by reponding simple commands from RS232 communication port. The Driver executes predefined tasks such as, run, stop, move definite steps, change direction, and some parameter settings. PC Settings The communication interface program has to be adjusted as the following: Connection speed Data Parity Stop bit : 9600 bps (baud) : 8 bit : No :1

Sample interface program : Hyperterminal.exe (embedded in Windows XP) · · Find the com port number on the PC, then adjust the Hyperterminal com port number. Hyperterminal : Settings: ASCII Setup : o Select "Send line ends with line feeds", o Select "Echo typed charecters locally" , o Line delay is 3 msec, o Character delay is 3 msec.

Command Format [] CR = 0D(hex), LF = OA(hex).

If command requires a parameter, enter numeric ascii characters defining the value. If command requires a parameter but parameter is not entered, driver responds current parameter value (the way to learn driver's parameter value).

The Driver accepts commands directly entered on hyperterminal consol. All commands consist of three ASCII characters terminated with Carriage Return and Line Feed character (simply Enter key with settings above). Command characters are entered by pressing the keys. There is no time restriction between characters. When Enter key is pressed, driver checks the keys and if there is a match with internal commands, it is executed.

STEMO Programming language is developed for the STEMO stepper motor driver to help the users who develope their own scripts required by their applications. The language has ability of defining the commands that affects the motor currents, motor speeds, direction, time delays, positions, relations with the inputs and outputs. These commands are collected together to form a program list (script file). STEMO-PS, an interface software is used to manage editing, save, opening saved files, compiling, error checking and debugging, dowloading to driver. STEMO-PS also serves as direct controlling of driver without programming, such as run/stop motor, changing direction, parameters, etc.
When the developed program is downloaded to driver, it is resident in the driver and self operated. No need any connection to PC. User program has capability of · Checking the status of 6 inputs, · Conditional operations with the inputs, · Activating/deactivating 2 outputs, · Changing direction of rotation, · Time delays, · Positioning, · Relation with 2 analog inputs, · Adjustments of motor current, speed, acceleration, microstep, and many parameters, · Conditional branch, jump, · Various programming features. See the document "STEMO-PS, Stemo Programming Manual" for more details about the programming.

Multi I/O connections for the Internal Operation mode is described the sections 4.3.1 ­ 4.3.4.

Precautions for stepper motors
· · · · Load characteristics should be inspected before selection the stepper motors. Inspect the motor's torque-speed diagrams in the motor datasheet to fit the application requirements. Set the driver current so that the motor maximum current should not be overflowed. Otherwise motor may be damaged by over temperature. The motors have better dynamic charecteristic in high speeds when the supply voltage is high. But, the dissipation is increased very much with high voltage supply. Use low voltage supply for low speed applications. (0 - 200 rpm are relatively low speeds) Select the motor which holding torque is two times of the load torque for better operations .
