What does this do?
Firmware is the operational software that is embedded in your Cyber-shot camera. This utility will update the firmware of your DSC-V1 Cyber-shot camera to add language choices for German / Spanish / Italian / Portuguese to the existing options of English / French. This firmware update makes only this change, and affects no other part of the camera operation.

WARNING!!: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after installing this update. By continuing this update process and downloading and installing this utility, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this installation cannot be reversed.

This utility requires the following items for proper installation:
A computer with:
Available Hard Disk Space: 5MB or more
Installed Memory: 32MB or more
A USB port (requires the USB cable that shipped with the camera**), a Memory Stick Slot or an attached Memory Stick Reader/ writer
Update functionality is not guaranteed if you use another commercially available USB cable.
One of these operating systems installed:

Camera power supply:
Use only the AC-LS5 AC adapter that is supplied with a DSC-V1 camera
It is extremely important to ensure that camera AC power source is not interrupted during this process. The camera may rendered inoperable if the camera power fails during this update.
Memory Stick media that was recently formatted with the camera.
It is recommended that you use the Memory Stick media supplied with the camera or one that is similar. Memory Stick PRO media will not work properly.
For the Windows 2000 and XP Operating System Only: During the installation of this update, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.


Download and Installation Instructions
Download the DSCV1V2E.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the DSCV1V2E.EXE file to begin the installation.
One file named DSCV1V2E.ASH (3.08MB) will be extracted.
At the "Uncompress Folder" box, click OK to extract the files to the current directory.
Please continue with the Software Updating Instructions section below.

Software Updating Instructions
Ensure that the Memory Stick media to be used is blank and recently formatted with the DSC-V1 camera.
Confirm that the Cyber-shot camera is fully powered by the AC-LS5 AC adapter plugged into a working power outlet.
WARNING!!: The camera may rendered inoperable if the power fails during this update.
Using one of the following methods, copy the DSCV1V2E.ASH file to the Memory Stick media.
For computers equipped with a Memory Stick Slot or Memory Stick Adapter:
Insert the formatted Memory Stick media into the Memory Stick Slot or Adapter on the computer.
Copy the DSCV1V2E.ASH file from the computer onto the Memory Stick media.
Right-click the DSCV1V2E.ASH file, and click Copy.
On the Windows Desktop, click the My Computer icon.
At the "My Computer" window, click to open the Memory Stick drive icon.
At the Memory Stick Drive window, right-click on a blank space in the window, and then click Paste to copy the file to the root (main) Memory Stick media directory.
For computers that do not have Memory Stick media capability:
Insert the formatted Memory Stick media into the slot on the Cyber-shot camera.
Using the USB cable supplied with the camera, connect the Cyber-shot camera to the computer.
Copy the DSCV1V2E.ASH file from the computer onto the Memory Stick media.
Right-click the DSCV1V2E.ASH file, and click Copy.
On the Windows Desktop, click the My Computer icon.
At the "My Computer" window, click to open the Memory Stick drive icon.
At the Memory Stick Drive window, right-click on a blank space in the window, and then click Paste to copy the file to the root (main) Memory Stick media directory.
Select the DSCV1V2E.ASH file, and then copy it.
Please continue with the Updating the Camera Firmware section.

Updating the Camera Firmware
If not already installed, please insert the Memory Stick media containing the Firmware Update file into Cyber-shot camera.
On the Cyber-shot camera, turn the mode-SW to "SET UP."
Press and hold the MENU button, and then turn on the camera.
NOTES: The camera must be off before you press and hold the MENU button..
Release the MENU button.
On the camera screen, select Setup 2 (the bottom icon on the left-hand side).
At the "Setup 2" screen, confirm the version listed is 1.
From the "Version" menu, select "Update." A blue screen will appear stating "Memory Stick Access."
It will take a few minutes (approximately 1.5 min) for the firmware update to complete.
NOTES: NOTE: If one of the following errors appear, please refer to its corresponding Solution.
Error 20: No software file
Cause: The DSCV1V2E.ASH update file was not found on the Memory Stick media
Solution: Return to step 10 (Download and Installation Instructions) above and copy the file over to the Memory Stick media. Proceed with the "Run the Firmware Update" steps.
Error 30: Format Memory Stick before use
Cause: Other files or folders may exist on the Memory Stick media
Solution: Follow the instructions that came with your Cyber-shot camera to format the Memory Stick media. Begin again from step 8 (Download and Installation Instructions) above.
Error 40: Invalid file
Cause: The file on the Memory Stick media is corrupt or the version of the file to be installed is the same or older than the current one in the camera.
Solution: Check the firmware version of your camera model, and if older than the Firmware Update Utility Version 2, then please return to step 1 (Download and Installation Instructions) above, and begin the steps to download and install the update again.
Please continue with the Check the Firmware Update Version section.

Check the Firmware Update Version
At the "Software Update" version screen, compare the versions listed next to "Current" and "New."
If the "New" version is higher than the "Current" version, select OK to continue with the firmware update.
NOTE: If the "New" version is lower or the same as the "Current" version, then this Firmware update is not necessary. Select Cancel, and then return to the Cyber-shot software update page and check that you have downloaded the latest version available for your model.
NOTE: If an Error 50: No enough battery message appears, it means there is not enough power to complete this update. Please confirm the camera is properly connected to the AC adaptor and it is plugged into a functioning power outlet. After confirming proper power connectivity, please return to step 1 (Updating the Camera Firmware) above and proceed..
As the firmware update installs, the circle signs will begin to blink and then turn on one-by-one. Once all three circles are lit, the update is finished.
NOTE: If one of the following errors appear, please refer to its corresponding Solution. If no error occurs, then continue with step 4..
If the circles from are not fully lit, and they do not blink for over 30 seconds
Cause: The update has probably failed.
Solution: Please remove the AC adapter from the camera. Skip to the Re-updating instructions below.
After the firmware update is successfully completed, please turn off the camera.
On the Cyber-shot camera, turn the mode-SW to "SET UP."
Press and hold the MENU button, and then turn on the camera.
NOTE: The camera must be off before you press and hold the MENU button..
Release the MENU button.
On the camera screen, select Setup 2.
At the "Setup 2" screen, confirm the version listed is 2.
NOTE: If the current version listed is lower than, and not "2", it may be necessary to download and install the firmware update again.
The installation of the DSC-V1 Cyber-shot® Camera Firmware Update Utility is now complete.

Re-updating Instruction
These instructions are only necessary if an error or problem occurred during the DSC-V1 Cyber-shot® Camera Firmware update process.
After removing the AC adapter from the camera, please confirm that the Memory Stick media is still inserted in the Cyber-shot camera. Please wait for 5 seconds and then power the camera by reconnecting the AC adapter.
When the "re-updating" process starts, the red Memory Stick access lamp inside the battery compartment door will turn on.
During this re-updating procedure, there are no indicators on the LCD screen.
Approximately 1.5 minutes later, the red Memory Stick access light will turn off automatically. The re-updating process is complete.
NOTE: If the access lamp of Memory Stick blinks during the re-update, or the access lamp does not turn off after 5 minutes, a failure may have occurred with the Cyber-shot camera or Memory Stick media. Please contact a local Sony Service Center for repair options..
