Safety
This power supply is a Safety Class I instrument according to IEC classification and has been
designed to meet the requirements of EN61010-1 (Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment
for Measurement, Control and Laboratory Use). It is an Installation Category II instrument
intended for operation from a normal single phase supply.
This instrument has been tested in accordance with EN61010-1 and has been supplied in a safe
condition. This instruction manual contains some information and warnings which have to be
followed by the user to ensure safe operation and to retain the instrument in a safe condition.
This instrument has been designed for indoor use in a Pollution Degree 1 environment (no
pollution, or only dry non-conductive pollution) in the temperature range 5°C to 40°C, 20% - 80%
RH (non-condensing). It may occasionally be subjected to temperatures between +5° and -10°C
without degradation of its safety.
Use of this instrument in a manner not specified by these instructions may impair the safety
protection provided. Do not operate the instrument outside its rated supply voltages or
environmental range. In particular excessive moisture may impair safety.

WARNING! THIS INSTRUMENT MUST BE EARTHED
Any interruption of the mains earth conductor inside or outside the instrument will make the
instrument dangerous. Intentional interruption is prohibited. The protective action must not be
negated by the use of an extension cord without a protective conductor.
When the instrument is connected to its supply, terminals may be live and opening the covers or
removal of parts (except those to which access can be gained by hand) is likely to expose live
parts. The apparatus shall be disconnected from all voltage sources before it is opened for any
adjustment, replacement, maintenance or repair. Capacitors inside the power supply may still be
charged even if the power supply has been disconnected from all voltage sources but will be
safely discharged about 1 minute after switching off power.
Any adjustment, maintenance and repair of the opened instrument under voltage shall be avoided
as far as possible and, if inevitable, shall be carried out only by a skilled person who is aware of
the hazard involved.
If the instrument is clearly defective, has been subject to mechanical damage, excessive moisture
or chemical corrosion the safety protection may be impaired and the apparatus should be
withdrawn from use and returned for checking and repair.
Make sure that only fuses with the required rated current and of the specified type are used for
replacement. The use of makeshift fuses and the short-circuiting of fuse holders is prohibited.
Do not wet the instrument when cleaning it. The following symbols are used on the instrument:-

Earth (ground) terminal.

mains supply OFF.

l mains supply ON.

alternating current (ac)

direct current (dc)

4
EMC
This instrument has been designed to meet the requirements of the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC.
Compliance was demonstrated by meeting the test limits of the following standards:
Emissions
EN61326 (1998) EMC product standard for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control and
Laboratory Use. Test limits used were:
a) Radiated: Class B
b) Conducted: Class B
c) Harmonics: EN61000-3-2 (2000) Class A; the instrument is Class A by product category.
Immunity
EN61326 (1998) EMC product standard for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control and
Laboratory Use.
Test methods, limits and performance achieved were:
a) EN61000-4-2 (1995) Electrostatic Discharge : 4kV air, 4kV contact, Performance A.
b) EN61000-4-3 (1997) Electromagnetic Field, 3V/m, 80% AM at 1kHz, Performance B.
c) EN61000-4-11 (1994) Voltage Interrupt, 1 cycle, 100%, Performance B.
d) EN61000-4-4 (1995) Fast Transient, 1kV peak (AC line), 0.5kV peak (DC Outputs),
Performance B.
e) EN61000-4-5 (1995) Surge, 0.5kV (line to line), 1kV (line to ground), Performance B.
f) EN61000-4-6 (1996) Conducted RF, 3V, 80% AM at 1kHz (AC line only; DC Output
connections <3m not tested), Performance A.
According to EN61326 the definitions of performance criteria are:
Performance criterion A: `During test normal performance within the specification limits.'
Performance criterion B: `During test, temporary degradation, or loss of function or
performance which is self-recovering'.
Performance criterion C: `During test, temporary degradation, or loss of function or
performance which requires operator intervention or system reset occurs.'
Where Performance B is stated it is because DC Output regulation may deviate beyond
Specification limits under the test conditions. However, the possible deviations are still small and
unlikely to be a problem in practice.
Note that if operation in a high RF field is unavoidable it is good practice to connect the PSU to
the target system using screened leads which have been passed (together) through an absorbing
ferrite sleeve fitted close to the PSU terminals.
Cautions
To ensure continued compliance with the EMC directive observe the following precautions:
a) after opening the case for any reason ensure that all signal and ground connections are
remade correctly and that case screws are correctly refitted and tightened.
b) In the event of part replacement becoming necessary, only use components of an identical
type, see the Service Manual.

5
Installation
Mains Operating Voltage
Check that the instrument operating voltage marked on the rear panel is suitable for the local
supply. Should it be necessary to change the operating voltage, proceed as follows:
1. Ensure that the instrument is disconnected from the AC supply.
2. Remove the screws holding the case upper and handle and lift off the case upper.
3. Change the transformer connections following the diagram below:
230V Operation 115V Operation

BLUE BROWN BLUE BROWN
4. Re-assemble in the reverse order.
5. To comply with safety standard requirements the operating voltage marked on the rear panel
must be changed to clearly show the new voltage setting.
Fuse
The AC fuse is located in the fuse drawer in the lower part of the IEC inlet connector. To change
the fuse remove the line cord and open the fuse drawer with a suitable tool.
The correct fuse type is 20 x 5mm 250V HBC time-lag with the following rating:
Model 230V 115V
30V/1A 800mA (T) 1.6A (T)
30V/2A; 18V/3.3A; 56V/1.1A 1.25A (T) 2.5A (T)
Dual and Triple 2A (T) 4A (T)
Make sure that only fuses with the required current rating and of the specified type are used for
replacement. The use of makeshift fuses and the short-circuiting of fuseholders are prohibited.
Mains Lead
When a three core mains lead with bare ends is provided this should be connected as follows:
BROWN - MAINS LIVE
BLUE - MAINS NEUTRAL
GREEN/YELLOW - EARTH Safety Earth Symbol
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus may not correspond with the
coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured green-and-yellow must be connected to the terminal in the plug which
is marked by the letter E or by the safety earth symbol shown above or coloured green or green-
and-yellow.
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter
N or coloured black.
The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the
letter L or coloured red.
WARNING! THIS INSTRUMENT MUST BE EARTHED.
Any interruption of the mains earth conductor inside or outside the instrument will make the
instrument dangerous. Intentional interruption is prohibited.

6
General
Service Handling Precautions
Service work or calibration should only be carried out by skilled engineers using high quality test
equipment. If the user is in any doubt as to his competence to carry out the work, the instrument
should be returned to the manufacturer or their agent overseas for the work to be carried out.
The tracks on the printed circuit boards are very fine and may lift if subjected to excessive heat.
Use only a miniature temperature-controlled soldering iron and remove all solder with solder wick
or suction before attempting to remove a component.

Dismantling the instrument
WARNING!
When the instrument is connected to its supply, terminals may be live and opening the covers or
removal of parts (except those to which access can be gained by hand) is likely to expose live
parts. The instrument shall be disconnected from all voltage sources before it is opened for any
adjustment, replacement, maintenance or repair.
1. Remove the 6 side screws and two handle screws to release the top cover.
2. Remove the screws at the front edge of the chassis that secure the front panel assembly to
the chassis (2 on the singles, 4 on the dual/triple); the front panel assembly can now be laid
flat to give better access to its own pcb and the driver pcb in the chassis.
3. To remove the driver pcb first unplug the transformer, power transistor and control
connectors from the pcb, noting their orientation (pin 1 on the socket to corner marker on the
pcb header). Unclip the pcb from the nylon mounting pillars and lift free.
4. The auxiliary output driver pcb on the triple can similarly be removed from the heatsink
bracket.
5. To remove the control pcb from the front panel first pull off the control knobs. Remove the
screws that secure the pcb to the backs of the terminal, the front panel bracket and front
moulding and lift the pcb clear. Note that prior to the introduction of the PSU 'safety'
terminals mid 2006, the fastenings for the terminals were 4BA.
6. To access the power transistors on the large heatsink(s) remove the 2 screws retaining each
heatsink.
7. Reassemble in reverse order taking great care to ensure that all connections are remade
exactly as before dismantling and that no insulation creepage and clearance distances have
been compromised.

7
Model Changes (as at September 2006)
C21 and C22 (C121 and C122) on the Driver pcb are now both 470uF to prevent the output from
occasionally turning on briefly when the mains power switch is turned off.
The Control pcbs for both the singles and dual/triple units have undergone revisions since
introduction; both pcbs have been changed to use surface mount components wherever possible
and the dual/triple Control has had further minor changes for the EL302Tv model. The particular
version can be identified by the part number printed on the Control pcb; each version has its own
Component Layout and Parts List but the circuit descriptions are common because the
component references are unchanged between versions.
The versions are as follows:
Singles
Version 1: All through-hole components, built on pcb part number 35555-2890.
Version 2: Surface-mount version, from mid-2004, built on pcb part number 35555-4240.
Dual/Triple
Version 1: All through-hole components, built on pcb part number 35555-2870.
Version 2: Surface-mount version, from mid-2004, built on pcb part number 35555-4370.
Version 3: Minor further changes necessary for EL302Tv, from August 2006, built on pcb
part number 35555-4710.
The EL302Tv uses a different auxiliary output driver assembly, built on pcb part number
35555-4720, with a variable 1·5V to 5V output controlled by VR11 on the Version 3 Control board.
In mid-2006, revised 'safety' terminals were introduced, as standard, to all models. These
terminals will accept 4mm safety leads with a fixed shroud. The fastener changes associated
with these revised terminals are shown separately at the end of the Parts Lists and apply to all
models.

8
Circuit Descriptions
The driver board contains the main power supply and its driver components plus the auxiliary
supplies for the control board. The control board contains the control, measurement and displays.
The auxiliary output is on a separate pcb.
Component references apply to all the single output supplies and Channel A on dual and triple
models (the left-hand channel when viewed from the front). Channel B components are all
numbered from 100 upwards, e.g. RP3, C9 and R24 on Channel A are RP103, C109 and R124
on Channel B.
The linear regulator is in series with the positive output but, because of the way in which the
control and metering works, it is convenient to consider the regulator output (OP) as 0V and to
regard the negative output as the controlled output voltage (-V).
Supply rail and signal names on the schematics are followed by A or B for Channels A and B
respectively, e.g. OP/A, IOHIA or AuxA/+5V.

Driver Pcb
The main winding is tapped (not EL301) to reduce overhead and therefore dissipation in the
series regulator. The relay selects the appropriate tap which is determined by the voltage on the
output terminals; see relay check in the Calibration section. A full wave bridge rectifier feeds
reservoir capacitor C31.The total secondary winding voltage at full load and the reservoir
capacitor voltage off load/full load are listed below for the different models at nominal mains
(230V):
EL301/302 EL183 EL561
Secondary (Vrms) 35 23 62

Reservoir off-load (VDC) 47 31 84
Reservoir full-load (VDC) 38 25 71

A 21Vrms centre tapped winding and full wave rectification provide the auxiliary supplies for the
different models at nominal mains. IC8 generates +5V for the micro-controller and display.
Q7 and D10 generate +7.5V and D11 5V.
Comparator IC9A compares the voltage on the output terminals to a reference derived from the
5V rail. When the output voltage falls below the relay change voltage Q5 is turned off and Q6
on, the relay selects the low tap on the transformer secondary. R64 is model dependent, see
Parts Lists and Schematics. When the output on/off switch is off, SW1 is high turning the relay
drive off, selecting the high tap on the transformer.
Q1, Q4 and the transistor(s) on the large heatsink form a triple darlington series regulator
controlled by the error amplifiers on the control board.

3.3V/5V Auxiliary Pcb (EL302T only)
The bridge rectifier feeds reservoir capacitor C203. The full load secondary voltage is 7·9Vrms
giving 9·4VDC (off load) and 8·0VDC (with a 1A output load) at the reservoir capacitor.
IC203 is a low drop adjustable negative voltage regulator. The regulator generates an internal
1.22V reference between pins 1 and 4. When the output is set to 5V, the end of R203 is open;
when set to 3.3V R203 is connected across R202 by the front panel switch SW3.
IC202 is a 2.5V reference and IC201A a comparator. When the output is set to 5V the end of
R208 is open; if the output falls below 4.6V IC201A's output goes low turning on the Current Limit
LED. When the output is set to 3.3V R208 is connected across R207 by the front panel switch
SW3; when the output drops below 3.1V the Current Limit LED is again lit.

9
1.5V to 5V Auxiliary Pcb (EL302Tv only)
The bridge rectifier feeds reservoir capacitor C4. The full load secondary voltage is 8.2Vrms with
the output set to 5V and a 2A load.
IC1 is a 300kHz step down (buck) regulator. The feedback voltage is compared against an
internal 0.92V reference. The output voltage is set by the front panel control VR11, which is in the
feedback path.
IC3 is a 2.5V reference and this is divided down to give 0.86V. If the feedback voltage goes below
this level due to excess output current, comparator IC2B lights the Unreg led.
The RH voltmeter measures the output voltage via an isolation circuit. Opto-isolator IC4 has one
led and two matched photo diodes inside. One photo diode is placed in the feedback path of IC2A
to linearise the output from the photo diodes. R64 on the RH side output converts this current
back to a voltage and the ADC reads this when the Show Aux Output switch SW2A is closed.
The preset current limit value is achieved by measuring the voltage on the top end of the RH
output Current control and is selected by SW2B.

Control Board
Voltage Control
IC7C buffers the voltage control potentiometers VR1 and VR2; VR5 sets the maximum output
voltage. D6 provides the reference (VREF) which is nominally 2·45V.
IC7A is a differential amplifier. VR9 trims differential gain to ensure good voltage regulation, see
Calibration section.
The output of IC7C drives the input of IC7A when the ON-OFF switch, SW1B, is in the ON
position. When SW1B is in the OFF position the input of IC7A is grounded via R50, setting the
output volts to zero.
The output of IC7A provides the base drive (BASE) to the regulating transistors Q4 and Q1 on the
driver pcb via D3.

Current Control
IC7D is the error amplifier which compares the voltage on the wiper of VR3, the current limit
control, with the voltage generated across the current sense resistor R21. When the output
current reaches the set limit IC7D takes control via D4, changing the supply from constant voltage
to constant current mode. At the same time Q1 is turned on by IC7D, making ILIMIT go high; this
is read by the microcontroller IC3 which turns on the constant current lamp, LED2.
VR4 sets the maximum output current; VR8 adjusts the output current to be the same as the
preset current at low levels, see Calibration section.

Measurement and Display
The measurement and display is controlled by a microcontroller, IC3. IC5, IC2 and associated
components, together with IC3, form a dual slope A-to-D converter. Multiplexer IC4, under the
control of IC3, selects the signals to be measured. The status line SW1 from the output ON/OFF
switch is read by IC3 to determine which signals are measured, as follows:

Status Voltage Measurement Current Measurement
Output Off Preset Volts (VPRT & ILO) Preset Current (IPHI & ILO)
Output On Output Volts (+SENSE & VOLO) Output Current (IOHI & ILO)

IC3 processes the measurement and drives the two multiplexed 3-digit, 7-segment, LED displays
via digit driver IC1 and segment latch IC6. Individual segment current limit is provided by RP1
and RP2. The constant current lamp, LED2, is part of this multiplexing scheme; the output on
lamp, LED1, is driven directly from the +5V auxiliary rail via R2 when the dc output switch SW1-A
is closed.

10
Calibration
Refer to the General section for dismantling instructions and safety precautions. Component
adjustment references are given as Channel A/ Channel B, e.g. VR5/VR105; Channel A is the
left-hand output. For single output supplies use Channel A references. All adjustments are on the
front panel control board.
Limits given are for 30V units; values in [ ] brackets are for 18V and 56V models respectively.
Allow 5 minute warm-up before commencing calibration.

Control pcb calibration points (viewed from rear)

Connect the DMM (set to Volts) across the output, no load, output ON.
Adjust voltage controls for a reading of 18.xxxx on the DMM; note exact reading.
Connect load, set current control to maximum and adjust load for 2A [3A, 1A] output current.
Adjust VR9/109 (differential voltage gain) until the external DMM matches the previous reading
exactly.

3·3V/5V Output Check (EL302T only)
Connect the DMM to the output. With switch set to 3·3V position check for a reading of 3·20 to
3·40 Volts.
Switch to the 5V position and check output is between 4·85V and 5·15V.

1.5V to 5V Pcb (EL302Tv only)
Set the output voltage to maximum and connect a DMM to its output. Set the RH output switch to
off. Press the Show Aux Output switch and adjust VR1 on the 5V pcb so the RH voltmeter
matches the DMM reading.

Relay Changeover Voltage Check (not EL301)
With no load connected set the output voltage to approximately 12V. Increase the voltage
gradually and check that the relay changeover occurs (audible click) at between 14·0V and 14·5V
[10·3/10·9V, 25·9/26·7V].
After the relay has changed over reduce the voltage gradually and check that the relay changes
back at between 13·3V and 13·9V [9·7/10·3V, 24·6/25·4V].
