SAFEfY PRECAUTIONS
GENERAL GUIDEUNES
1. When servicing, observe the original lead dress. If a short circuit Is found, replace all parts which have been overheated or damaged by the short circuit. 2. After servicing, see to It that all the protective devices such as Insulation barriers, insulation papers shields are properly Installed. 3. After servicing, make the following leakage current checks to prevent the customer from being exposed to shock hazards.

ELECTROSTATICALLY SENSITIVE (ES) DEVICES
Some semiconductor (solid state) devices can be damaged easily by static electricity. Such components commonly are called Electrostatically Sensitive (ES) Devices. Examples of typical ES devices are Integrated circuits and some field-effect transistors and semiconductor chip components. The following techniques should be used to help reduce the incidence of component damage caused by static electricity. 1. Immediately before handling any semiconductor component or semiconductor-equipped assembly, drain off any electrostatic charge on your body by touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, obtain and wear a commercially available discharging wrist strap device, which should be removed for potential shock reasons prior to applying power to the unit under test. 2. After removing an electrical assembly equipped with ES devices, place the assembly on a conductive surface such as aluminum foil, to prevent electrostatic charge buildup or exposure of the assembly. 3. Use only a grounded-tip soldering Iron to solder or unsolder ES devices. 4. Use only an anti-static solder removal devlce classified as anti-static can generate electrical charges sufficient to damage ES devices. 5. Do not use freon-propelled chemicals. These can generate electrical charges sufficient to damage ES devices. 6. Do not remove a replacement ES device from Its protective package untlllmmedlately before you are ready to Install It. (Most replacementES devices are packaged with leads eletcrlcally shorted together by conductive foam, aluminum foil or comparable conductive material). 7. Immediately before removing the protective material from the leads of replacement ES device, touch the protective material to the chassis or circuit assembly into which the device will be Installed. CAUTION : Be sure no power Is applied to the chassis or circuit, and observe all otner asfety precautions. 8. Minimize bodily motions when handling unpackaged replacement ES devices. (Otherwise harmless motion such as the brushing together of your clothes fabric or the lifting of your foot from a carpeted floor can generate static electricity sufficient to damage an ES deVice).

LEAKAGE CURRENT COLD CHECK
1. Unplug the AC cord and connect a Jumper between the two prongs on the plug. 2. Measure the resistance value, with an ohm meter, between the Jumpered AC plug and each exposed metallic cabinet part on the equipment such as screwheads connectors, control shafts, etc. When the exposed metallic part has a return path to the chassis, the reading should be between 1M ohm and 5.2 M ohm. When the exposed metal does not have a return path to the chassis, the reading must be 00.

lEAKAGE CURRENT HOT CHECK (See Agure 1)
1. Plug the AC cord directly Into the AC outlet. Do not use an Isolation transformer for this check. 2. Connect a 1.5k ohm, 10 watts resistor, In parallel with a O.15uF capacitor, between each exposed metallic part on the set and a good earth ground such as a water pipe, as shown In Figure 1. 3. Use an AC voltmeter, with 1000 ohms/Volt or more sensitivity, to measure the potential across the resistor. 4. Check each exposed metallic part, and measure the voltage at each point. 5. Reverse the AC plug In the AC outlet repeat each of the above measurements. 6. The potential at any point should not exceed 0.75 volts RMS. A leakage current tester (Simpson Model 229 equivalent) may be used to make the hot checks, leakage current must not exceed 1/2 milliamp. In case a measurement Is outside of the limits specified, there Is a possibility of a shock hazard, and the equipment should be repaired and rechecked before It Is returned to the customer.

1-16. Description of Functions

1-16-1. S-VHS system
S-VHS is a newly developed video system designed for the video information age. It is based on the VHS video system that has gained wide acceptance throughout the world, and it incorporates technology which yields a higher resolution and higher picture quality. When an S-VHS VTR is used in combination with the newly developed high-performance S-VHS video cassettes, the picture quality is vastly improved with a horizontal resolution of more than 400 lines and with a higher degree of clarity and greater realism. Recording and playback featuring a high picture quality are possible using video cassettes with the 5\'"51 mark while conventional recording and playback can be enjoyed using video cassettes bearing the ~ mark.

A tape recorded by the S-VHS system of this unit cannot be played back on a VTR using only the VHS system. However, the unit's recording system is compatible with the conventional VHS system so that its tapes can be played back even on a conventional VHS VTR. Also, tapes recorded on a conventional VHS VTR can be played back on this unit. · Use a tape recorded on the standard mode when playing back a tape which has been recorded on another VHS type of VTR. In this case, the noise level may increase in the still picture, slow motion, fast forward or fast rewind playback mode. · Before recording something important or memorable (such as a wedding), be sure to stage a test and check that the sound and pictures are being recorded properly. · While the video camera, VTR or video tape is being used. the manufacturer makes no guarantees as to the content of a recording in the event that trouble or malfunctioning should occur to prevent or interfere with that recording. High picture quality VHS technology has been incorporated in VTRs bearing the HQ mark. A high picture quality will be obtained by playing back in this machine a tape which has been recorded in a VTR bearing the HQ mark. Compatibility is featured with conventional VHS VTRs.

1-16-4. Hi-Fi system
This unit features two ways in which sound can be recorded.

Hi-Fi sound recording
An FM recording system using aUdio-only rotary heads is used to enable recording and playback of top-notch Hi-Fi sound.

Normal sound recording
This consists in the same kind of recording system as that used by conventional VTRs. · Compatibility with conventional recording system This system enables conventional (normal) recording to be conducted simultaneously so that material thus recorded can be played back even on conventional VTRs. It is also possible to play back tapes which have been recorded by a conventional system.

Outlined below are the features of this Hi-Fi system that produces such an excellent sound quality.

1)

Separate audio-only heads mounted on rotary cylinder

Whereas, in the past, the sound of video material was recorded by fixed heads, it is now recorded using audio heads mounted on the rotary cylinder. This is a completely new system in which the video sound is recorded again using the video-only heads. Fig. (1) shows the arrangement of the heads, including the audio-only rotary heads, mounted on the rotary cylinder.

a: w

~

c:J Z

o

Q.

2)

Use of newly developed audio processing IC.

The newly developed special-purpose Hi-Fi sound IC chip processes the signals at the optimum level without causing any deterioration in the input signals and it achieves a quantum improvement in the dynamic range to 90 dB, in contrast to 80 dB which was produced in the past, to add a new measure of power to the sound.

3)

Deep-level sound recording free from Interference with video signals

The audio-only heads record signals whose frequency has been modulated across a wide band at a deeper level of the tape. What's more, the azimuth angle of the video heads is changed completely to record the video signals. As a result of this unique system, there is no interaction between the signals and both the audio and video signals can be recorded clearly even when their recording positions are identical. (Figs. 2 and 3)

4)

Switching noise reduction circuit

An electronic switching circuit and an active filter have been built into the noise reduction area, which is the very heart of the audio circuitry, while capacitors tailored to audio specifications and low-noise resistors have been adopted in the level sensor area. Together, they slash the amount of noise generated when the audio (Hi-Fi) heads are switched and they help to produce a clean and clear Hi-Fi sound which has excellent linearity.

The purpose of periodic maintenance is to preserve the functioning of this machine throughout it's useful life. The user or service dealer should perform these maintenance regularly to ensure that maximum utility is obtained from the machine. The VCR IS a complicated piece of equipment It contains many belts, rollers, heads etc., which become worn, and deteriorate as time goes by, causing trouble. Dust and dirt will also impede the proper functioning of the machine. In light of this, it is very important that overall maintenance be done according to the maintenance chart to maintain the functions of the VCR, and to avoid accidental problems. This maintenance should also be performed after any repairs are done on the equ ipment.

The VCR used for busi ness appl ications requ ires particu lar attention for severa I reasons. The insta Ilation conditions and appl ications are not always the best. long use times, to poor environmental conditions may adversely affect the life-span and performance of the machine. Regular maintenance assures that the purchaser obtains the maximum value for his expenditure. Accordingly, the necessity of regular maintenance should be fully explained at the time of sale, as well as during after-sale repairs.
