Technical Report
AGAINST WHITE STRIPES.

1.General:

To solve the problem of white stripes caused by a toner cartridge, the PCU-ROM software is modified. After completion of warm-up or printing operation, the new software makes the developing roller rotate in reverse direction by approximately 1.9mm to prevent the toner from adhering to the blade in a toner cartridge. In addition, service tools for moving toner adhering on the blade will be supplied.

3.Description:

1. Updating ROM 1) Before updating the ROM, execute Sim22-5 to verify current software version. 2) Update PCU-ROM into a version presented in the table below. 3) Also, update other ROMs than PCU-ROM, into the versions presented in the table below or later versions. 4) After updating, change value of "Q item" from "0" to "72" using Sim44-4.

Changes : 1. Change of Specifications 1. The following changes have been implemented to cope with white stripes. 1) When the warming up and printing performance are completed, DV roller is made rotate slightly in reverse by about 1.9mm and the accumulated toner at the pressure contact area between the blade and DV roller in cartridge will be removed. Then toner will be prevented from sticking to blade in toner cartridge. The item "R" has been added to Sim44-4 regarding this function. * The setting of R = 0 (Default) means permission of reverse rotation and the setting of R = 1 means prohibition of reverse rotation. 2) The number of executions of high - density process control will be controlled when the power is put on (includes when the power comes back from auto power shut off) and when the machine has been left with no effect of auto power shut off. The item "Q" has been added to Sim44-4 to set the execution timing of process control. * The setting of Q has been changed to "72" because the setting of Q = 0 (Default) is the same specification of function as before.

4.Action:

1. Machine: From the middle of January 2006 production. 2. DSK: From February 2006 production.

2. Clean toner adhering to toner cartridge blade * Before beginning to clean a toner cartridge, make copies of the single-color BK, C, M, and Y respectively using Sim64-1: A-7, B-255, and C-1 to check for white stripes. If no white stripes are shown, cleaning is unnecessary. If white stripes appear, perform the following cleaning processes: Jigs:

1) Pull out the toner cartridge from the unit, and return the toner on developing roller to the hopper. 1)-1 Check that the black dot position of the agitation gear is at the top. If the position is displaced, insert the gear in the developing roller coupling and turn it clockwise so that the black dot comes to the top. Note: If the black dot is not at the top, the sheet mounted on the agitator on the hopper side comes to the position at the joint between the hopper and the tub. It does not allow toner to move to the hopper side when the toner cartridge is held upside down. Be sure to check the position of the black dot.

1)-2 Hold the toner cartridge upside down in the middle, and move the cartridge up and down like a seesaw for several times. Note 1: Holding the cartridge upside down lets the toner fall from the waste toner box. Provide a sheet of paper to catch the falling toner. Note 2: Do not touch the developing roller and the 2nd blades. (It may cause a failure in imaging.)

2) To return toner to the hopper side further, turn the toner level detection lever clockwise or counterclockwise until it stops, and then turn the lever in reverse direction until it stops. Repeat this action for 4 to 5 times. (Turn the lever until clicks are heard.) Note 1: Note that toner may fall from the cartridge. Note 2: Be sure to take steps 1) and 2). (Skipping these steps may cause leakage of toner from both sides of the developing roller.)

3) Holding the cartridge upside down, lightly tap the 5 screws of the doctor blade 4 times respectively (a total of 20 times), using a screwdriver. (Let the toner adhering to the doctor bladed fall off.) Note: Note that toner may fall from the cartridge.

4) To prevent the toner let off in steps 1, 2, and 3 from returning to the developing roller to clean, place the cartridge upside down so that the developing roller faces the operator. Then remove two screws outside and remove the developing roller cover.

5) Insert the 2nd blade cleaning jig in the middle of the developing roller, and then slightly lift the 2nd blade, and insert the tip of the 1st blade cleaning jig beside the 2nd blade cleaning jig. Then pull out the 2nd blade cleaning jig, and insert the 1st blade cleaning jig until it stops.( to smoothly insert the 1st blade cleaning jig slanted against the developing roller.) Note 1: Push in the jig until it hits the frame vertically. Note 2: Because a black toner cartridge does not have a 2nd blade, a 2nd blade cleaning jig is unnecessary.

6) Slide the jig to the left and right for 5 round trips, cleaning the 1st blade. Note 1: When removing the jig, pull it from upside using the bottom as a support. (Remove from the middle of the developing roller.) Note 2: Use one jig for a maximum of 8 times, 5 round trips in each process. Do not overuse the jig. Note 3. To avoid mixing of colors, wipe the 1st blade cleaning jig after use using a dry waste cloth.

7) Placing the upper part of toner cartridge down, insert the gear to the developing roller coupling and turn the gear counterclockwise by approximately 1/3 turns. (From the chin part to the tip of 2nd blade.) Note: Do not lift the toner hopper. (It may move toner to the developing roller side.)

8) Insert the 2nd blade cleaning jig in the middle of the developing roller, in parallel to the 2nd blade (The side with a label affixed must come to the 2nd blade side.) Note 1: Limit the jig insertion to the position indicated by the upper line. (To clean 8-mm area of 2nd blade, insert the jig for 8mm or less.)

9) Slide the inserted jig to the left and right for 5 round trips to clean the 2nd blade. (After cleaning, remove the jig from the center of the developing roller.) Note 1: When cleaning the 2nd blade, move the jig slowly to move the tool in parallel. Moving in parallel allows cleaning all of the applicable area without failure. Note 2: When cleaning the 2nd blade by round-trip movement, successful cleaning gives you a feeling of resistance (a feel of sandy vibration). Be aware of the feeling of cleaning while cleaning operation. Note 3: Move the jig for 5 round trips along with the 2nd blade. Note 4: Black toner cartridge, which has no 2nd blade, does not need this cleaning process. Note 5: Use of one jig is limited to 2 cleaning processes, with 5 round trips in each process. Do not overuse the jig. 2 processes using one side (5 round trips x 2 times), 4 processes using both sides (5 round trips x 4 times)

10) To return toner moved to the hopper side in steps 1) and 2) above to the developing roller, hold the toner cartridge upright with both hands, and then shake the cartridge to the left and right for 3 to 4 times. Note: After shaking the cartridge, wipe the dirt of toner using a dry waste cloth.

11) Insert the gear to the developing roller coupling, and turn the gear clockwise by 1/2 turns using a screwdriver. Repeat turning for 4 to 5 times.

12) Replace the developing roller cover, tighten two screws, and then put the cover back to the main unit. Note: If the lower part of the developing roller is dirty with toner, wipe it using a dry waste rag. Take care not to touch the developing roller.

13) Take steps from 1) to 12) above for a toner cartridge that has a problem of white stripes. Note: To avoid mixing of colors, wipe the 1st blade cleaning jig after use using a dry waste cloth. A jig can be used for different colors after cleaning with a dry cloth. 14) For a cleaned cartridges, make 4 copies for autonomous printing using Sim64-1: A-7, B-255, C-4. Check for white stripes on a fourth copy. Then make copies of single-color printing with the full-page character chart to check for white stripes - If white stripes appear, perform cleaning process and check again. If white stripes do not disappear after 2 times of cleaning process, replace the toner cartridge with new one. 15) Perform high-density process control and halftone process control forcibly by the following simulation tasks: Note: Even if you try to exchange one color of the toner cartridge the operation would be automatically operated, so any kind of correspondence would not be needed. - Forcible operation of high-density process control by Sim44-6. - Forcible operation of halftone process control by Sim44-26.
