Attached are (1) Bill Kenncdy's Progress - Febru([I)'. DAAf; (2) Hugh Laucr's Progress report: Pilot;
and (3) Jim White's Progress. COIJIIJ1llllicalioll aJld 1/0 Software. Systems- Software's major
accomplishments and problcms this month are summarized below.

Systems Software was reccntly reorganized to achieve a more managcable workload distribution.
The attac.:hcd reports retlect this redistribution. Dctails of the reorganization are reportcd in Bill
Lynch's 14 February mcmo elltitled "Systems Software Section Rcorganization."


Major Accomplishments
o First drafts ofSS' 1979 work plans were preparcd.

o A Star-based uscr interface for verification diagnostics was dcmonstrated.

o An RDC and Shugart 4008 were installed on one ofSS' DO Ervls.

o Transfer of text bctween an Alto and IBM System 6 diskctte was demonstrated.

o Pilot 3.0 asynchronous and byte-synchronolls RS232C l11!crocode is operational.

o The Pup Package, r'TP, and OISel> were convertcd to rvlesa 5.0.

Major Problenls
o Staffing, particularly in the microcode and diagnostics areas, has become a critical problem.

o The unavailability of 00 ENIs and microcode capable of running rvIesa 5.0 prevented Pilot A's release
on 15 February.

o DAM lacks a dual-disk, wide-bodied Alto on which to nm Star 7.1 software.
